AT&T is the third-largest U.S. wireless carrier and one of the largest fiber broadband providers, with about 70 million wireless subscribers and 8+ million fiber customers. Revenue is approximately $122 billion. The company divested its media assets (WarnerMedia) to Discovery in 2022, ending a disastrous foray into entertainment. AT&T is now a pure-play connectivity company focused on 5G wireless and fiber expansion.
Mobility (wireless) is the core profit driver at about 55% of revenue. Consumer Wireline (fiber, legacy DSL) and Business Wireline (enterprise networking) make up the rest. AT&T is investing heavily in fiber-to-the-home, targeting 30+ million locations. The company carries over $130 billion in debt, a legacy of the Time Warner acquisition and spectrum purchases.
AT&T's lineage goes back to Alexander Graham Bell's telephone patent in 1876. The original AT&T was broken up by the government in 1984 into seven "Baby Bells." SBC Communications, one of those Baby Bells, acquired AT&T in 2005 and took its name. The $85 billion Time Warner acquisition in 2018 was supposed to create a media-telecom giant โ instead it destroyed value and was unwound just four years later.

Financial data is approximate and based on most recent annual filings.
AT&T has effectively been broken up and reassembled twice โ the 1984 breakup and the subsequent reconsolidation through mergers. The Time Warner deal destroyed roughly $50 billion in shareholder value in four years. AT&T's dividend, once considered sacred, was cut by 47% in 2022 after the WarnerMedia spinoff โ ending a streak that income investors had relied on for decades.
Post-media, AT&T is a simpler, more focused company, and the fiber buildout is the right strategy. But the debt mountain and years of capital misallocation mean it'll take time to rebuild credibility with investors.
