🇪🇹 Ethiopia

Ethiopia is Africa's second-most populous country with 126 million people and a GDP of about $155 billion. It's the only African country never colonized by a European power (Italy's brief 1936-41 occupation is contested). Ethiopia was the world's fastest-growing major economy for much of the 2010s, averaging 10% GDP growth. The country is building the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile — Africa's largest hydroelectric project, which has created a geopolitical crisis with Egypt and Sudan over water rights. Addis Ababa hosts the African Union headquarters. Ethiopia has its own calendar (13 months, 7 years behind the Gregorian calendar), its own alphabet (Ge'ez script), and its own time system.

Agriculture (coffee — Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee — flowers, sesame, khat) employs about 70% of the population. Manufacturing is growing, with Chinese-built industrial parks producing textiles and shoes for export. Ethiopian Airlines is Africa's largest and most profitable airline, generating over $7 billion in revenue. The Tigray war (2020-2022) devastated the northern economy and strained government finances. The country is seeking to liberalize its telecom sector — Safaricom launched in 2022, breaking the state monopoly.

Ethiopia's Danakil Depression is the hottest inhabited place on earth, with average temperatures above 34°C and landscapes that look like another planet — sulfur springs, acid pools, and salt flats. The country's rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, carved from single blocks of stone in the 12th century, are sometimes called the "Eighth Wonder of the World." Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old hominid fossil that changed our understanding of human evolution, was found in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia's growth story was one of Africa's best, but the Tigray war, ethnic tensions, and debt distress have set it back significantly. The fundamentals — young population, strategic location, agricultural potential — remain strong if stability returns.
