South Africa is the continent's most industrialized economy β 60 million people with a $400 billion GDP, though it's been overtaken by Nigeria and Egypt in size. The country has the world's deepest mines, the largest platinum reserves (about 80% of global supply), and significant gold, diamonds, chrome, and manganese deposits. Post-apartheid South Africa (since 1994) has struggled with extreme inequality β the Gini coefficient is the highest in the world. Load-shedding (rolling blackouts from the failing state power utility Eskom) has become a defining economic crisis, costing an estimated 2% of GDP annually. Johannesburg is Africa's financial capital, and Cape Town is one of the world's most beautiful cities.
Mining, automotive manufacturing (BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, VW all have plants), financial services, and agriculture (wine, citrus, maize) are the main sectors. China, the US, Germany, and Japan are the top trade partners. Unemployment is about 32% β one of the highest in the world β and youth unemployment exceeds 60%. The rand has been one of the most volatile emerging market currencies. GDP growth has been anemic at 0.5-1.5% for years, well below the rate needed to address poverty and inequality. The country has Africa's most developed financial markets and the continent's only major stock exchange.

South Africa is the only country to have voluntarily dismantled its nuclear weapons β it had six bombs and gave them up before the transition to democracy. The country has 11 official languages β more than any other country. The Cradle of Humankind near Johannesburg has produced more hominid fossils than anywhere else on earth, including "Mrs. Ples" and "Little Foot."
South Africa's potential is enormous but the execution failures β Eskom, corruption, unemployment β are crippling. The energy crisis is the most urgent problem; until the lights stay on reliably, nothing else can improve. The country is underperforming its potential by a wide margin.
