Botswana is Africa's great success story — it went from one of the poorest countries on earth at independence in 1966 to an upper-middle-income country with a GDP of about $20 billion. The secret? Diamonds. Botswana is the world's second-largest diamond producer by value, and the government's managed the revenue better than almost any other resource-rich developing country. The population is just 2.4 million in a country the size of France, and the Kalahari Desert covers about 70% of the land. The Okavango Delta is one of the world's most spectacular wildlife areas.

Diamonds account for about 70% of export revenue and 30% of GDP. De Beers moved its diamond sorting and valuation operations from London to Gaborone in 2013 — a major coup. Beef exports to the EU are the second-largest earner. The government has been trying to diversify into financial services and tourism, with mixed results. Botswana's sovereign wealth fund holds about $4.5 billion, providing a buffer against diamond price volatility.

Botswana has the highest concentration of African elephants in the world — about 130,000, roughly a third of Africa's total. The country also has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates globally at about 20%, but its treatment program is considered a model for sub-Saharan Africa. Botswana's Tsodilo Hills contain over 4,500 rock paintings, some dating back 100,000 years.

Botswana's governance model is the envy of the continent, but diamond dependency is a ticking clock as lab-grown diamonds gain market share. Diversification isn't optional anymore — it's urgent.
