The Gambia is mainland Africa's smallest country β a sliver of land along the Gambia River, just 50 km wide at its broadest point, entirely surrounded by Senegal except for its Atlantic coastline. Population is 2.7 million with a GDP of about $2.2 billion. The country was ruled by eccentric dictator Yahya Jammeh for 22 years β he claimed to cure AIDS with herbal remedies and threatened to behead gay people. His departure in 2017 (after losing an election and initially refusing to leave) opened a new democratic chapter. The Gambia is a popular budget tourism destination for Europeans, particularly British package holidaymakers.
Agriculture (groundnuts/peanuts, mainly), tourism, and remittances are the economic pillars. The Gambia River is navigable for 200 km, making it a potential trade corridor, but this potential is largely unrealized. Re-export trade (importing goods and selling to neighboring countries) is significant. The country is heavily aid-dependent. GDP growth has been around 5-6%, partly driven by post-Jammeh optimism and investment.

The Gambia's Kunta Kinteh Island (formerly James Island) is a UNESCO site β it was a key slave trading post and the ancestral home of Kunta Kinte from Alex Haley's "Roots." The country has one of the highest bird diversities relative to its size in Africa, with over 560 species recorded. The Gambia is the only country in mainland Africa whose borders were drawn entirely by a river's course.
The Gambia's democratic transition is encouraging, but the economy is too small and undiversified to generate the jobs its young population needs. Closer integration with Senegal seems logical but politically sensitive.
