Guinea-Bissau is one of the world's most unstable countries β this tiny West African nation of 2.1 million with a GDP of just $1.6 billion has experienced four coups and 16 attempted coups since independence in 1974. It's become a major transit point for South American cocaine heading to Europe, earning it the label "Africa's first narco-state." The country is an archipelago of 88 islands (the BijagΓ³s) plus a mainland portion. Cashew nuts dominate the economy β Guinea-Bissau is the world's fifth-largest producer. Portuguese is the official language, but Kriol is the lingua franca.
Cashew nuts account for about 90% of export revenue β an extreme dependency on a single commodity. India is the main buyer. The country has virtually no manufacturing sector. Fishing licenses sold to foreign fleets (mainly Chinese and European) provide some government revenue. GDP per capita is about $760, among the lowest in the world. The informal economy dwarfs the formal one.

The BijagΓ³s Archipelago is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with virtually no tourism infrastructure β it's one of the most pristine island ecosystems in West Africa, home to saltwater hippos that swim between islands. Guinea-Bissau's independence war hero, AmΓlcar Cabral, is considered one of Africa's greatest anti-colonial thinkers β he was assassinated in 1973, just months before independence.
Guinea-Bissau is trapped in a cycle of coups and cashew dependency. The narco-trafficking dimension adds a dangerous layer. Without institutional stability, development is essentially impossible.
