Lesotho is the only country in the world entirely above 1,000 meters elevation β a mountainous kingdom of 2.3 million completely surrounded by South Africa. GDP is about $2.5 billion. The country is sometimes called the "Kingdom in the Sky." Lesotho's main economic asset is water β the Lesotho Highlands Water Project diverts water to South Africa's Gauteng province (including Johannesburg) in exchange for royalties that fund about 25% of the government budget. The country has one of the highest HIV rates in the world at about 21% of adults. Diamond mining has become increasingly important.
Textiles (manufactured under AGOA trade preferences for the US market), water royalties, diamond mining, and remittances from miners working in South Africa are the main revenue sources. South Africa dominates all trade. The loti is pegged 1:1 to the South African rand. Agriculture is mostly subsistence-level, and the country imports most of its food. Youth unemployment exceeds 35%.

Lesotho is one of the few places in Africa where it snows regularly β the Afriski resort in the Maluti Mountains is one of only two ski resorts in sub-Saharan Africa. The country's dinosaur footprints at Moyeni are some of the best-preserved in the world, dating back 200 million years. Lesotho's blanket culture is unique β Basotho blankets are worn as everyday clothing and are a symbol of national identity.
Lesotho's complete encirclement by South Africa defines its economic reality β it's essentially a dependent territory in all but name. Water and diamonds provide revenue, but the structural constraints are severe.
