Madagascar is the world's fourth-largest island β 28 million people on a landmass the size of France that split from Africa 160 million years ago. GDP is about $16 billion. That geological isolation created extraordinary biodiversity: about 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on earth, including all 100+ species of lemur. Despite this natural wealth, Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world β over 75% of the population lives on less than $2.15 per day. Vanilla is the signature export β Madagascar produces about 80% of the world's natural vanilla. Deforestation has destroyed about 90% of the original forest cover.
Vanilla, nickel (from the Ambatovy mine, one of the world's largest), cloves, and textiles are the main exports. France remains the dominant trade partner. Agriculture employs about 80% of the population, mostly at subsistence level. The country has significant untapped mineral resources including graphite, ilmenite, and sapphires. GDP growth has been erratic, disrupted by political crises (four coups or unconstitutional power changes since 2002). The ariary is one of the world's weakest currencies.

Madagascar's baobab trees β the iconic "Avenue of the Baobabs" β are up to 800 years old and can store up to 120,000 liters of water in their trunks. The island's chameleons account for about half of all chameleon species in the world. Madagascar has its own martial art, Moraingy, a bare-fisted fighting style practiced for centuries.
Madagascar's biodiversity is irreplaceable and disappearing fast. The vanilla boom provides income but the price is volatile. Without political stability and forest protection, the country's greatest assets will be gone within a generation.
