Malawi is one of the world's poorest countries β a landlocked southeastern African nation of 20 million with a GDP of just $13 billion. It's called the "Warm Heart of Africa" for the friendliness of its people. Lake Malawi, the country's defining feature, is the third-largest lake in Africa and contains more fish species than any other lake on earth β over 1,000, most found nowhere else. Tobacco is the economic backbone, accounting for about 50% of export revenue. The country is one of the most densely populated in Africa, with most people farming small plots. Malawi has been a rare example of peaceful democratic transitions in the region.
Tobacco, tea, sugar, and uranium are the main exports. The country is heavily aid-dependent, with foreign assistance comprising about 30% of the government budget. Agriculture employs about 80% of the population but is almost entirely rain-fed, making it extremely vulnerable to drought and flooding. The kwacha has been repeatedly devalued. GDP growth has been around 3-4%, barely keeping pace with population growth of 2.6%.

Lake Malawi's cichlid fish are a textbook example of evolution in action β over 850 species evolved from a single ancestor, the fastest speciation rate of any vertebrate group. Malawi's Gule Wamkulu masked dance tradition is UNESCO-recognized and involves elaborate costumes representing spirits of the dead. The country has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world, though recent legislation has raised the minimum age to 18.
Malawi's poverty trap is deep β tobacco dependency, climate vulnerability, and rapid population growth create a challenging combination. The democratic tradition is a genuine asset, but economic transformation requires investment the country can't generate domestically.
