Namibia is one of the world's least densely populated countries β 2.6 million people in 824,000 square kilometers, giving it just 3.2 people per square kilometer. GDP is about $13 billion. The Namib Desert, from which the country takes its name, is the world's oldest desert at 55-80 million years. Namibia is the world's fourth-largest uranium producer and a significant diamond producer (marine diamonds mined from the seabed off the coast). The country has one of Africa's best conservation records β it was the first African country to incorporate environmental protection into its constitution. Windhoek, the capital, is one of the cleanest cities in Africa.
Mining (diamonds, uranium, zinc, gold), fishing, and tourism are the main sectors. South Africa is the dominant trade partner, and the Namibian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the rand. The country has attracted interest for green hydrogen production β its vast desert and coastal wind resources are ideal for renewable energy. Agriculture is mostly livestock (cattle and sheep) in the arid conditions. Inequality is extreme β Namibia has one of the highest Gini coefficients in the world.

Namibia's Skeleton Coast is littered with shipwrecks and whale bones β the Bushmen called it "The Land God Made in Anger." The country's Etosha Pan is a massive salt flat visible from space that transforms into a flamingo-filled lake during the rainy season. Namibia's communal conservancy program has been so successful that wildlife populations have recovered dramatically β the country now has the world's largest free-roaming population of black rhinos.
Namibia's green hydrogen potential could be a game-changer β several multi-billion-dollar projects are in development. The conservation model is world-class. But inequality and youth unemployment need urgent attention.
