Senegal is West Africa's most stable democracy β a country of 18 million with a GDP of about $28 billion that's never experienced a coup. Dakar is one of Africa's most cosmopolitan cities, with a thriving arts, music, and fashion scene. The country is on the verge of becoming a significant oil and gas producer β the Sangomar offshore field began production in 2024, and the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas field (shared with Mauritania) is coming online. Senegal's wrestling (la lutte) is the national sport, with top wrestlers earning more than football players. The country hosted the 2022 African Cup of Nations and won it for the first time.
Fishing, agriculture (groundnuts, phosphates), tourism, and increasingly oil and gas are the main sectors. France is the dominant trade partner, though China and India are growing. Remittances from the large Senegalese diaspora contribute about 10% of GDP. The CFA franc provides monetary stability. GDP growth has been strong at 5-6%, and the oil and gas revenues could push it higher. The informal sector employs about 90% of workers.

Senegal's Lake Retba (Lac Rose) is naturally pink due to a specific algae β it's also extremely salty, allowing people to float effortlessly. The country's GorΓ©e Island, a UNESCO site, was a major slave trading post and is now a powerful memorial and museum. Senegal's teranga (hospitality) culture is so central that the national football team is nicknamed the "Lions of Teranga."
Senegal's democratic stability and incoming oil revenue create a genuinely promising outlook. If the resource revenue is managed well β a big if in Africa β Senegal could become West Africa's next success story.
