Somalia has been the textbook "failed state" for three decades β a Horn of Africa country of 18 million with a GDP estimated at $8 billion. The central government collapsed in 1991, and while a federal government has been reconstituted, it controls limited territory. Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, controls significant areas. Mogadishu has seen a surprising construction boom despite the insecurity. Somalia has the longest coastline in mainland Africa (3,025 km), and piracy off its coast was a major international concern in the 2000s-2010s. The Somali diaspora (about 2 million) sends back an estimated $2 billion annually in remittances β the economic lifeline. The country has a thriving mobile money system despite having no formal banking sector for years.
Livestock (camels, goats, sheep β Somalia has one of the world's largest camel herds) is the main export, primarily to Gulf states. Remittances dwarf all other income sources. The informal economy is enormous β Mogadishu's Bakara Market is one of the largest open-air markets in East Africa. Telecommunications is surprisingly advanced β mobile money transfers work better than in many stable countries. Oil exploration has attracted interest but security prevents development. The Somali shilling is largely worthless β US dollars and mobile money dominate transactions.

Somalia's camel population (about 7 million) is one of the largest in the world, and camel milk is a staple food. The country's ancient port city of Zeila was a major trading hub connecting Africa to Arabia and India for over 2,000 years. Somali poetry is an extraordinarily rich oral tradition β Somalia is sometimes called a "nation of poets," and poetry battles are a traditional form of political discourse.
Somalia's resilience is remarkable β the economy functions despite state collapse, and Mogadishu's rebuilding shows genuine momentum. But Al-Shabaab, clan politics, and climate-driven displacement remain massive obstacles to stability.
