China is the world's most consequential economic story of the past half-century. A population of 1.4 billion, a $17.8 trillion GDP (second only to the US), and a manufacturing sector that produces more than the US, Japan, and Germany combined. China lifted 800 million people out of poverty between 1980 and 2020 — the largest poverty reduction in human history. The country builds more high-speed rail, installs more solar panels, and produces more electric vehicles than the rest of the world combined. But the growth model is shifting: the property sector (once 30% of GDP) is in crisis, the population is shrinking for the first time since the Great Famine, and youth unemployment has been a persistent concern. China's Belt and Road Initiative has made it the largest bilateral lender to developing countries, surpassing the World Bank.

Manufacturing remains the backbone — China produces 50% of the world's steel, 60% of its cement, 70% of its solar panels, and 80% of its rare earth elements. Exports total about $3.5 trillion annually, with electronics, machinery, and textiles leading. The US, EU, and ASEAN are the top trade partners. The property crisis has knocked 1-2 percentage points off GDP growth, which has slowed from double digits to around 4-5%. China's tech sector — Huawei, BYD, TikTok's ByteDance, Tencent — is increasingly competitive globally, particularly in EVs, batteries, and AI. Government debt, including local government financing vehicles, is estimated at over 100% of GDP.

China has built more skyscrapers in the last 20 years than the rest of the world has in all of history. The country's high-speed rail network exceeds 42,000 km — longer than the rest of the world's combined. China consumes half the world's pork and produces 95% of the world's rare earth elements, giving it enormous leverage over global tech supply chains.

China's era of easy double-digit growth is over, but writing it off would be a mistake. The pivot to advanced manufacturing, EVs, and green tech is real and formidable. The demographic decline and property overhang are serious headwinds, but this is still the most important economic competition of the century.
