Pakistan is the world's fifth-most populous country — 230 million people with a GDP of about $340 billion, making it a lower-middle-income economy. The country is a nuclear power, has the world's sixth-largest military, and sits at the crossroads of South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Pakistan's textile industry is the backbone of manufacturing, and the country is the world's fourth-largest cotton producer. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a $62 billion infrastructure project, is the flagship of China's Belt and Road Initiative. Pakistan has some of the world's most dramatic mountain scenery — K2, the world's second-highest peak, and five of the fourteen 8,000-meter mountains are here. The country has been in and out of IMF programs for decades.

Textiles account for about 60% of exports. Remittances from 9+ million overseas Pakistanis bring in about $30 billion annually. Agriculture (cotton, rice, wheat, sugarcane) employs about 40% of the workforce. The economy has been in crisis — inflation hit 38% in 2023, the rupee lost about 40% of its value, and the country narrowly avoided default. The IMF's latest bailout package is $7 billion. Energy shortages, circular debt in the power sector, and a narrow tax base (only about 1% of the population pays income tax) are structural problems. The IT sector is a bright spot, growing at 20%+ annually.

Pakistan's truck art — elaborately decorated trucks with intricate paintings, poetry, and metalwork — is a unique folk art tradition that's been exhibited in galleries worldwide. The country's Mohenjo-daro is one of the world's oldest planned cities, built around 2500 BC with a sophisticated drainage system. Pakistan has the world's highest paved international road — the Karakoram Highway reaches 4,693 meters at the Khunjerab Pass on the Chinese border.

Pakistan's boom-bust cycle shows no sign of breaking. The fundamentals — young population, strategic location, textile base — are there, but governance failures and fiscal indiscipline keep the country in perpetual crisis mode. The IT sector offers hope if it can scale.
