Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago — 17,508 islands stretching across 5,000 km, home to 277 million people (the fourth-largest population on earth). GDP is about $1.3 trillion, making it the largest economy in Southeast Asia and a G20 member. The country is the world's largest palm oil producer, largest nickel producer, and largest thermal coal exporter. Indonesia has more active volcanoes than any other country (about 130) and sits on the Ring of Fire. Jakarta is sinking so fast (up to 25 cm per year in some areas) that the government is building a new capital, Nusantara, on Borneo. The country has the world's largest Muslim population (230 million) but practices a moderate, syncretic form of Islam.

Palm oil, coal, nickel, and natural gas are the main commodity exports. Indonesia has banned raw nickel ore exports to force domestic processing — a strategy that's attracted massive Chinese investment in nickel smelting for EV batteries. Manufacturing (textiles, electronics, automotive) is growing. The digital economy is booming — GoTo, Tokopedia, and Grab are regional tech giants. GDP growth has been steady at 5%, and the country aims to reach 7% to achieve its 2045 "Golden Indonesia" vision. The informal sector employs about 60% of workers.

Indonesia's Komodo dragons are the world's largest living lizards, found nowhere else on earth. The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia was the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history — it caused the "Year Without a Summer" globally. Indonesia has the world's largest flower (Rafflesia arnoldii, up to 1 meter across) and the world's largest single flower structure (Amorphophallus titanum, the corpse flower).

Indonesia is Southeast Asia's sleeping giant that's finally waking up. The nickel strategy, digital economy, and demographic dividend are powerful tailwinds. The new capital project is either visionary or a white elephant — time will tell.
