Bahrain is a tiny island kingdom of 1.5 million people (though over half are foreign workers) in the Persian Gulf, with a GDP of about $44 billion. It was the first Gulf state to discover oil in 1932 but is now the first to be running out โ production is down to about 40,000 barrels per day. The country's pivoted hard toward financial services, hosting over 400 financial institutions and serving as the banking hub for the Gulf region. Bahrain hosts the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, making it strategically critical despite its size. The Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix has put it on the global sports map since 2004.
Financial services now contribute about 17% of GDP, more than oil. Aluminum smelting (through Alba, one of the world's largest smelters) is a major non-oil industry. Saudi Arabia provides Bahrain with about 150,000 barrels of oil per day from a shared field, effectively subsidizing the economy. Tourism, particularly from Saudi visitors crossing the King Fahd Causeway, brings in over $4 billion annually.

Bahrain has a 400-year-old "Tree of Life" โ a lone mesquite tree in the middle of the desert with no apparent water source, visited by 50,000 tourists annually. The country was home to the ancient Dilmun civilization, believed by some scholars to be the inspiration for the Garden of Eden.
Bahrain's post-oil transition is further along than most Gulf states, but it's also the most financially vulnerable โ high debt and Saudi dependence are real constraints. The fintech push is smart but needs scale.
