Bhutan is the world's only country that measures Gross National Happiness instead of GDP — and it's not just a slogan, it's embedded in policy. This Himalayan kingdom of 780,000 people has a GDP of just $3 billion but is carbon-negative, absorbing more CO2 than it emits thanks to constitutional requirements that 60% of land remain forested (currently at 72%). Tourism operates on a "high value, low volume" model with a daily fee of $200 per visitor. Bhutan didn't have television until 1999 and didn't allow tourists until 1974. The country is entirely mountainous, with no traffic lights in the capital Thimphu.

Hydropower is the economic backbone — Bhutan sells surplus electricity to India, which accounts for about 30% of government revenue and 40% of exports. India is overwhelmingly the dominant trade partner, providing about 80% of imports. Agriculture employs over 50% of the population but contributes only 16% of GDP. The country has been investing in IT and education to diversify.

Bhutan is the only country in the world where the sale of tobacco is banned entirely. The national sport is archery, and competitions involve trash-talking and dancing. Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), perched on a 3,000-meter cliff face, is one of the most photographed sites in Asia despite Bhutan's tiny tourist numbers.

Bhutan's GNH model is fascinating but faces pressure from youth unemployment and urbanization. The hydropower revenue stream is reliable, but the country's extreme dependence on India limits its economic sovereignty.
