🇫🇯 Fiji

Fiji is a South Pacific archipelago of 330 islands (110 inhabited) with a population of 930,000 and a GDP of about $5.5 billion. It's the hub of the Pacific Islands — Suva hosts most regional organizations, and Fiji Airways connects the scattered island nations. Tourism is the lifeblood, with over 900,000 visitors annually drawn by some of the world's most beautiful coral reefs. The country has a complex ethnic dynamic between indigenous Fijians (57%) and Indo-Fijians (37%), descendants of laborers brought by the British. Fiji has had four coups since 1987, all partly rooted in this ethnic tension. The country's rugby sevens team is a global powerhouse — they won Olympic gold in 2016.

Tourism contributes about 40% of GDP. Sugar was historically the main export but has declined — now bottled water (Fiji Water, ironically owned by an American billionaire), fish, and garments lead. Australia and New Zealand are the main trade partners. Remittances from Fijians working abroad, particularly in the military and security sectors, are significant. Climate change is an existential threat — several villages have already been relocated due to rising seas.

Fiji Water is the country's largest export by value, yet many rural Fijians lack access to clean drinking water — a irony that's drawn international criticism. Fiji's Beqa Lagoon has one of the world's highest concentrations of soft coral species. The country was the first in the world to ratify the Paris Climate Agreement.

Fiji's tourism recovery post-COVID has been strong, but climate vulnerability is the defining challenge. As the Pacific's most developed island nation, it's also the region's loudest voice on climate action.
