The Solomon Islands is a Pacific archipelago of 720,000 people spread across nearly 1,000 islands with a GDP of about $1.7 billion. The country was the site of some of WWII's fiercest fighting β the Battle of Guadalcanal was a turning point in the Pacific War. The Solomon Islands switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 2019, a geopolitically significant move that brought Chinese investment and infrastructure. The country has some of the most biodiverse coral reefs in the world. A civil conflict (1998-2003) required an Australian-led intervention force. Logging has been the main revenue source but is rapidly depleting the forests.
Logging (about 60% of exports, but unsustainable at current rates), fishing, palm oil, and cocoa are the main economic activities. Australia, China, and Japan are the top trade partners. The country is heavily aid-dependent, with Australia as the largest donor. GDP growth has been around 2-3%. The Solomon Islands dollar has been relatively stable. Infrastructure is minimal β most islands are accessible only by boat or small aircraft.

The Solomon Islands has one of the highest rates of linguistic diversity in the world β about 70 languages for 720,000 people. Some islanders in the Solomons have naturally blond hair despite dark skin β a genetic trait unrelated to European ancestry, caused by a unique gene variant. The country's Marovo Lagoon is the world's largest saltwater lagoon.
The Solomon Islands' pivot to China has reshaped its geopolitical position, but the logging-dependent economy is on borrowed time. Sustainable fisheries and tourism could provide alternatives, but the infrastructure gap is enormous.
