Samoa is a Polynesian island nation of 220,000 people with a GDP of about $850 million. The country is culturally one of the most traditional in the Pacific β the fa'a Samoa (Samoan way) governs daily life through a system of chiefs (matai) and extended family obligations. Robert Louis Stevenson spent his last years here and called Samoa "the most beautiful place in the world." The country switched from driving on the right to the left in 2009 to align with Australia and New Zealand (its main trade partners), making it one of the few countries to ever switch driving sides. Samoa skipped December 30, 2011 entirely when it jumped across the International Date Line.
Remittances (about 20% of GDP), agriculture (coconut products, taro, fish), tourism, and foreign aid are the economic pillars. New Zealand and Australia are the dominant trade partners. The country has a small automotive wire harness factory (Yazaki) that's the largest private employer. Samoa is vulnerable to cyclones β Cyclone Evan in 2012 caused damage equivalent to 30% of GDP. The economy grows at about 2-3% annually.

Samoa's traditional tattooing (tatau) is the origin of the English word "tattoo" β the pe'a (male tattoo covering from waist to knees) is one of the most painful and elaborate traditional tattoos in the world. The country's To Sua Ocean Trench is a 30-meter-deep natural swimming hole surrounded by lush gardens β one of the most photographed spots in the Pacific. Samoa has produced a disproportionate number of NFL and rugby players relative to its tiny population.
Samoa's cultural preservation is admirable but the economic model is heavily dependent on remittances and aid. Climate vulnerability is the existential concern β rising seas and intensifying cyclones threaten the islands' future.
