French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity of 280,000 people spread across 118 islands in the South Pacific, covering an ocean area the size of Western Europe. GDP is about $6 billion. Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea are among the world's most aspirational luxury travel destinations β overwater bungalows were invented here in the 1960s. France conducted 193 nuclear tests in the territory between 1966 and 1996, primarily at Moruroa and Fangataufa atolls, leaving a legacy of environmental and health concerns. The territory produces about 95% of the world's black Tahitian pearls, a luxury product worth about $80 million annually.
Tourism (about 25% of GDP), pearl farming, fishing, and French government transfers (about 30% of GDP) are the economic pillars. The CFP franc is pegged to the euro. The territory imports about 10 times more than it exports, with the deficit covered by French transfers and tourism revenue. Vanilla from Tahaa island is among the world's finest and most expensive. The independence movement has gained strength, with the pro-independence party winning elections in 2023.

Bora Bora's lagoon is consistently ranked the most beautiful in the world β the island was a US military supply base during WWII, and remnants of gun emplacements are still visible. French Polynesia's Fakarava Atoll has a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve with one of the world's densest populations of grey reef sharks. Paul Gauguin spent his final years painting in the Marquesas Islands, and his works from this period are among the most valuable in art history.
French Polynesia's luxury tourism brand is unmatched, but the economic dependency on France is total. The independence question is gaining momentum, but economic viability without French transfers is the unanswered question.
