New Caledonia is a French special collectivity of 270,000 people in the South Pacific with a GDP of about $10 billion. The territory holds about 25% of the world's known nickel reserves, making it one of the most mineral-rich places on earth per capita. The indigenous Kanak people make up about 40% of the population, and the territory has been through three independence referendums (2018, 2020, 2021) — all narrowly won by the pro-France side, though the third was boycotted by independence supporters. Violent unrest erupted in 2024 over voting reform. The territory's lagoon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the world's largest enclosed lagoon.

Nickel mining and processing (about 90% of exports) dominate the economy. Three nickel smelters operate on the island, though all have faced financial difficulties due to low global nickel prices and competition from Indonesia. French government transfers account for about 15% of GDP. Tourism is growing but small compared to other Pacific destinations. The CFP franc is pegged to the euro. The cost of living is very high — comparable to metropolitan France.

New Caledonia's barrier reef is the world's second-longest after Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and its lagoon covers 24,000 square kilometers. The territory has one of the highest rates of endemic species in the world — about 75% of its plant species are found nowhere else. New Caledonia's blue river (Rivière Bleue) gets its color from dissolved minerals and is one of the most photographed natural features in the Pacific.

New Caledonia's political future remains unresolved — the independence question isn't going away, and the 2024 unrest showed how volatile the situation is. The nickel reserves are strategically valuable for the energy transition, but the smelters need to be economically viable.
