Hong Kong is a 7.4-million-person Special Administrative Region of China with a $380 billion GDP, operating under the "one country, two systems" framework that was supposed to last until 2047. The 2020 National Security Law fundamentally changed the territory's political landscape — the pro-democracy movement was crushed, media freedom curtailed, and tens of thousands emigrated. Despite this, Hong Kong remains one of the world's most important financial centers, with a stock exchange that's the fourth-largest globally. Victoria Harbour's skyline is one of the most iconic in the world. The territory has more skyscrapers than any other city on earth — over 480 buildings above 150 meters.

Financial services (about 23% of GDP), trade and logistics, tourism, and professional services are the pillars. Hong Kong's stock exchange is the primary offshore listing venue for Chinese companies. The territory has no sales tax, no capital gains tax, and a maximum income tax of 15%. The Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar through a currency board. Property prices are among the world's highest — the average apartment costs about 20 times median annual income. The economy has been recovering from the triple hit of protests, COVID restrictions, and geopolitical uncertainty.

Hong Kong has the world's longest covered escalator system — the Central-Mid-Levels escalator stretches 800 meters and carries 85,000 people daily. The territory consumes more champagne per capita than France. Hong Kong's Kowloon Walled City, demolished in 1993, was the densest place in human history — 33,000 people in 2.6 hectares, with buildings so close together that sunlight barely reached the ground.

Hong Kong's role as China's financial gateway is intact but diminished. The talent exodus and political changes have benefited Singapore and other competitors. The territory still works, but the magic that made it unique is fading.
