Iran is a Middle Eastern power of 88 million people with a $400 billion GDP that's been under various forms of US sanctions since 1979. The country has the world's second-largest natural gas reserves (after Russia) and fourth-largest oil reserves. Iran's civilization stretches back 7,000 years — Persepolis, the ancient capital, is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world. The country is a regional power broker with influence in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon (through Hezbollah), and Yemen (through the Houthis). Tehran is a sprawling metropolis of 9 million with some of the worst traffic and air pollution in the world. Iran has a surprisingly large and educated middle class — the literacy rate is 88% and over 60% of university students are women.

Oil exports (about 1.5 million barrels per day, down from 2.5 million pre-sanctions) remain the economic backbone, with China as the primary buyer. The automotive sector is the largest non-oil industry, producing about 1 million vehicles annually (mostly for domestic consumption). Petrochemicals, steel, and agriculture (pistachios — Iran is the world's largest producer — saffron, and carpets) are significant. Sanctions have crippled the economy — the rial has lost about 90% of its value since 2018, and inflation runs around 40-50%. The brain drain is severe, with an estimated 150,000 educated Iranians leaving annually.

Iran has the world's oldest animation — a 5,200-year-old pottery bowl from Shahr-e Sukhteh shows a goat jumping to eat from a tree in sequential images. The country's qanat system — underground aqueducts, some over 3,000 years old — is still used to irrigate farms and is a UNESCO-recognized engineering marvel. Iran's nose job rate is the highest in the world per capita — rhinoplasty is a cultural phenomenon, with the bandage worn as a status symbol.

Iran's potential is enormous — educated population, massive energy reserves, strategic location — but sanctions and political isolation have created a slow-motion economic crisis. Without a diplomatic breakthrough, the decline will continue.
