Israel is a $520 billion GDP economy of 9.8 million people that's become one of the world's leading tech hubs — the country has more startups per capita than any other nation and more companies listed on NASDAQ than any country outside the US. The "Startup Nation" label is earned: Israel spends about 5.4% of GDP on R&D, the highest ratio in the world. The country was founded in 1948 and has been in a state of conflict with its neighbors for most of its existence. Israel's tech sector generates about 15% of GDP and 50% of exports. The country has made the desert bloom — drip irrigation (an Israeli invention) and desalination plants provide 80% of drinking water. The Negev Desert covers 60% of the country.

Technology (cybersecurity, AI, fintech, agritech), diamonds (Israel is a major cutting and polishing center), pharmaceuticals, and defense exports are the main sectors. The country's Iron Dome missile defense system has a reported 90%+ interception rate and has been sold to several countries. Israel recycles about 90% of its wastewater for agriculture — the next closest country is Spain at about 20%. The Dead Sea, shared with Jordan, is the lowest point on earth at 430 meters below sea level and is shrinking by about 1 meter per year.

Israel's tech ecosystem is world-class and the gas discoveries have added energy security, but the unresolved conflict is a permanent drag on potential. The country's trajectory depends heavily on whether regional stability improves or deteriorates.
