Macau is a 700,000-person Special Administrative Region of China with a GDP of about $37 billion — and the highest GDP per capita in the world when gambling revenue is flowing. The territory is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal, and its gaming revenue is about five times Las Vegas's. The Cotai Strip, built on reclaimed land between Macau's two islands, hosts some of the world's largest casinos. Macau was a Portuguese colony for over 400 years (1557-1999), making it the last European colony in Asia. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site blending Portuguese and Chinese architecture. The territory is just 33 square kilometers — one of the most densely populated places on earth.

Gaming accounts for about 80% of government revenue and 50% of GDP. The six casino concessionaires (Sands, Wynn, MGM, Galaxy, SJM, Melco) drive the economy. COVID restrictions devastated the sector — revenue fell 80% — but recovery has been strong. The government has been pushing diversification into conventions, traditional Chinese medicine, and fintech. Macau has no income tax for most residents and massive fiscal reserves (about $50 billion). The pataca is pegged to the Hong Kong dollar.

Macau's Ruins of St. Paul's — the facade of a 17th-century Jesuit church — is the territory's most iconic landmark. The Macau Grand Prix is the only street circuit in the world that hosts both car and motorcycle races. Macau's egg tarts (pastéis de nata) are a fusion of Portuguese and Cantonese baking traditions and have become famous across Asia.

Macau's casino monopoly in China guarantees revenue, but Beijing's tightening control over the gaming sector and push for diversification signal that the pure gambling model has limits. The territory needs to become more than just a casino floor.
