🇫🇲 Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia is a Pacific island nation of 113,000 people spread across 607 islands with a GDP of about $430 million. The country has a Compact of Free Association with the US, which provides about 60% of government revenue. Micronesia's exclusive economic zone covers 2.6 million square kilometers of ocean — one of the largest in the Pacific. The islands were a major WWII battleground, and Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon contains the world's largest underwater graveyard of ships — over 60 Japanese warships sunk by US forces in 1944. The country faces severe climate vulnerability with most islands barely above sea level.

US Compact payments, fishing licenses (tuna is the main resource), and subsistence agriculture are the economic base. The country uses the US dollar. Emigration to the US (Micronesians can live and work in the US freely under the Compact) has been significant — an estimated 30,000+ Micronesians live in Hawaii and Guam. Tourism is minimal compared to other Pacific islands due to limited infrastructure and remote location.

Yap, one of Micronesia's states, uses giant stone discs called Rai as a form of traditional currency — some are 4 meters in diameter and weigh 4 tonnes. Ownership is transferred verbally without moving the stones. Chuuk Lagoon's wreck diving is considered the best in the world — coral-encrusted warships sit in crystal-clear water with artifacts still visible.

Micronesia's future depends almost entirely on the US Compact relationship and climate change. The renewed Compact (signed 2023) provides funding through 2043, but the long-term viability of low-lying atolls is uncertain.
