Nepal is a landlocked Himalayan country of 30 million wedged between China and India, with a GDP of about $40 billion. The country contains eight of the world's fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, including Everest (8,849 meters). Tourism and mountaineering are significant — about 800 people attempt Everest annually, each paying $11,000 just for the permit. Nepal transitioned from a Hindu monarchy to a federal democratic republic in 2008 after a decade-long Maoist insurgency. The country is heavily dependent on remittances — about 4 million Nepalis work abroad (mainly in the Gulf states, Malaysia, and India), and their earnings account for about 25% of GDP. Kathmandu Valley has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a 15-km radius.

Remittances, tourism, agriculture (rice, lentils, tea), and hydropower are the economic pillars. India dominates trade, providing about 65% of imports and buying about 70% of exports. Nepal has enormous hydropower potential (estimated 83,000 MW) but has developed less than 3% of it. The country imports almost all manufactured goods and fuel. GDP growth has been around 4-5%, but per capita income remains low at about $1,300. The 2015 earthquake caused $7 billion in damage — about 30% of GDP.

Nepal's Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha, making it one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world. The country's flag is the only national flag that isn't rectangular — it's two stacked triangles. Nepal has a living goddess tradition — the Kumari, a prepubescent girl selected through ancient rituals, is worshipped as the incarnation of the Hindu goddess Taleju until she reaches puberty.

Nepal's hydropower potential is its ticket to economic transformation, but political instability and Indian dependency complicate development. The remittance model works but creates a brain drain that limits domestic growth.
