North Korea is the world's most isolated country — a totalitarian state of 26 million with a GDP estimated at $18-30 billion (exact figures are unknown because the country publishes no economic data). The Kim dynasty has ruled since 1948. North Korea has nuclear weapons (estimated 40-60 warheads) and one of the world's largest standing armies (1.3 million active personnel, plus 7.7 million reserves — about 30% of the population). The country is under comprehensive international sanctions. Pyongyang is a showcase capital with grand monuments and empty boulevards, while rural areas face chronic food insecurity. The DMZ separating North and South Korea is the most heavily fortified border on earth.

The formal economy is centrally planned and largely opaque. Coal, textiles, and seafood were the main exports before sanctions tightened. China accounts for about 90% of North Korea's trade. The country has significant mineral resources — rare earths, magnesite, coal — worth an estimated $6-10 trillion, but they're largely undeveloped. Illicit activities (cybercrime, cryptocurrency theft, arms sales, counterfeit currency) generate an estimated $1-2 billion annually for the regime. The country experienced a devastating famine in the 1990s that killed an estimated 600,000-2.5 million people.

North Korea's Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang — a 105-story pyramid-shaped building — has been under construction since 1987 and has never opened. It's the world's tallest unoccupied building. The country operates its own intranet (Kwangmyong) completely separate from the global internet. North Korea's calendar starts from the birth year of Kim Il-sung (1912), making it currently Juche 115.

North Korea is a geopolitical problem with no solution in sight. The nuclear program ensures regime survival but guarantees continued isolation. The human cost of the system is incalculable.
