Oman is a Gulf state of 4.6 million (about 45% expatriates) with a GDP of about $105 billion. It's the quietest and most diplomatically neutral country in the Gulf โ Oman has maintained relations with Iran, Israel, and virtually every faction in the Middle East, making it an invaluable back-channel mediator. Sultan Qaboos, who ruled for 50 years until his death in 2020, transformed the country from a medieval backwater with 3 km of paved road to a modern state. Oman's geography is stunning โ dramatic fjords (khors), the vast Rub al Khali desert, and the Al Hajar mountains reaching 3,000 meters. The country is less flashy than Dubai or Doha, which is part of its appeal.
Oil and gas account for about 60% of government revenue and 70% of exports, but production is modest compared to neighbors at about 1 million barrels per day. Oman's Vision 2040 plan targets tourism, logistics (the Port of Duqm is being developed as a major industrial hub), mining, and fisheries for diversification. The country has taken on significant debt โ about 40% of GDP. China has invested heavily in the Duqm special economic zone. Oman's frankincense, harvested from trees in the Dhofar region, has been traded for over 5,000 years.

Oman's Majlis al Jinn is one of the world's largest cave chambers โ big enough to fit the Great Pyramid of Giza inside. The country's Wahiba Sands desert has sand dunes that are genetically distinct from other deserts โ the sand grains have unique mineral compositions. Oman was a major maritime empire โ Omani sailors traded with China, India, and East Africa for centuries, and Zanzibar was an Omani colony until 1964.
Oman's diplomatic neutrality is a strategic asset that money can't buy. The diversification challenge is real but the Duqm project and tourism potential provide pathways. Debt management is the near-term concern.
