Saudi Arabia is the world's largest oil exporter, home to Islam's two holiest cities (Mecca and Medina), and the dominant power in the Gulf. The country of 36 million has a GDP of about $1.1 trillion. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 is the most ambitious economic transformation plan in the Middle East — it includes NEOM (a $500 billion futuristic city in the desert), the Red Sea tourism project, and plans to diversify away from oil. Saudi Aramco is the world's most profitable company, generating over $100 billion in annual profit. The country holds about 17% of the world's proven oil reserves. Social reforms have been rapid — women can now drive (since 2018), cinemas have reopened, and entertainment events are booming.

Oil accounts for about 60% of government revenue and 70% of exports. Production capacity is about 12 million barrels per day, giving Saudi Arabia enormous influence over global oil prices through OPEC+. The Public Investment Fund (PIF) sovereign wealth fund has about $930 billion in assets and is the vehicle for Vision 2030 investments. Non-oil GDP growth has been strong at 4-5%, driven by construction, entertainment, and tourism. The Hajj pilgrimage brings about 2 million visitors annually. The country is investing heavily in sports — the Saudi Pro League has attracted global football stars with enormous salaries.

Saudi Arabia's Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali) is the largest continuous sand desert in the world — 650,000 square kilometers, larger than France. The country's Al-Ula region contains Hegra, a 2,000-year-old Nabataean city that's Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site — it's essentially a sister city to Petra in Jordan. NEOM's "The Line" project envisions a 170-km-long linear city with no cars, no streets, and no carbon emissions — if built as planned, it would be the most radical urban experiment in history.

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 is the biggest bet in the Middle East — the scale of ambition is staggering. The question is whether a petrostate can truly diversify before the oil age ends. The social opening is real and irreversible, but the political system remains absolute.
