South Korea's transformation from a war-devastated country poorer than Ghana in 1960 to the world's 12th-largest economy ($1.7 trillion GDP) is one of the most remarkable development stories in history. The country of 52 million is a global leader in semiconductors (Samsung and SK Hynix produce about 60% of the world's memory chips), shipbuilding, automotive (Hyundai-Kia is the world's third-largest automaker), and pop culture (K-pop, K-drama, Korean cinema). Seoul's metropolitan area holds about half the national population. South Korea has the fastest internet speeds in the world and the highest smartphone penetration rate. The country's birth rate (0.72 in 2023) is the lowest of any country ever recorded — an unprecedented demographic crisis.

Semiconductors, automobiles, ships, petrochemicals, and electronics dominate exports worth about $640 billion annually. China, the US, and Vietnam are the top trade partners. South Korea's tech dominance and cultural soft power are at their peak, but the birth rate crisis is genuinely existential — at current rates, the population could halve by 2100. The semiconductor bet is paying off, but the demographic math is terrifying.
