Syria has been devastated by civil war since 2011 — a conflict that has killed over 500,000 people, displaced 13 million (half the pre-war population), and destroyed much of the country's infrastructure. The pre-war population of 22 million has been scattered across the region and Europe. GDP collapsed from about $60 billion to an estimated $10-15 billion. The Assad regime fell in late 2024 after a rapid rebel offensive, ending over 50 years of Assad family rule. Syria's ancient cities — Aleppo, Damascus, Palmyra — contain some of the most important archaeological heritage in the world, much of it damaged or destroyed. Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth.

The pre-war economy was based on oil, agriculture, and manufacturing. Oil production has collapsed from 380,000 to about 20,000 barrels per day. Agriculture in the fertile northeast has been disrupted by conflict and drought. The Syrian pound has lost about 99% of its pre-war value. Reconstruction costs are estimated at $250-400 billion. Sanctions from the US and EU restrict trade and investment. The informal and war economy — smuggling, checkpoints, aid diversion — has replaced the formal economy in many areas.

Syria's Krak des Chevaliers is considered the finest example of Crusader castle architecture in the world — T.E. Lawrence called it "the finest castle in the world." The country's Ugarit archaeological site is where the world's oldest known alphabet was discovered, dating to about 1400 BC. Damascus steel, famous for its distinctive wavy pattern and legendary sharpness, was produced in Syria for centuries — the technique was lost and has never been fully replicated.

Syria faces the monumental task of rebuilding from one of the 21st century's worst conflicts. The fall of Assad opens a new chapter, but the challenges — reconstruction, reconciliation, refugee return, and governance — are staggering. The international community's willingness to fund reconstruction will determine the pace of recovery.
