Taiwan is a 23.5-million-person island with a $790 billion GDP that's the most important place in the global economy that most people can't find on a map. TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) produces about 90% of the world's most advanced chips — every iPhone, every Nvidia GPU, every advanced military system depends on Taiwanese silicon. The country operates as an independent democracy but is claimed by China, creating the world's most dangerous geopolitical flashpoint. Taiwan's night markets, bubble tea (invented here), and food culture are legendary. The country transitioned from martial law to vibrant democracy in the 1990s and now ranks higher than most Western countries on press freedom and civil liberties indices.

Semiconductors dominate — TSMC alone accounts for about 15% of GDP and its market cap exceeds $800 billion. Electronics, machinery, petrochemicals, and ICT products are the main exports. China (including Hong Kong) is the largest trade partner, absorbing about 40% of exports — a dependency that creates strategic vulnerability. The US, Japan, and South Korea are the other major partners. GDP growth has been around 3-4%, boosted by AI chip demand. The New Taiwan dollar has been relatively stable. The country has virtually no natural resources and imports nearly all its energy.

Taiwan has more convenience stores per capita than any country — about one 7-Eleven or FamilyMart for every 1,500 people, and they offer services from bill payment to fresh meals. The country's National Palace Museum holds the world's largest collection of Chinese art and artifacts — brought from the mainland in 1949. Taiwan's healthcare system consistently ranks among the world's best, with universal coverage and wait times that would make most Western countries envious.

Taiwan's semiconductor dominance gives it a "silicon shield" — the world can't afford to let it fall. But the China risk is existential and uninsurable. TSMC's diversification to Arizona and Japan plants is a hedge, not a solution.
