๐Ÿ“‹ About Tajikistan

Tajikistan is Central Asia's poorest country โ€” a mountainous nation of 10 million with a GDP of about $11 billion. Over 90% of the country is mountainous, and the Pamir Highway is one of the world's most spectacular (and dangerous) road trips. The country is heavily dependent on remittances from migrant workers in Russia โ€” they account for about 30% of GDP, one of the highest ratios in the world. Tajikistan fought a brutal civil war from 1992-97 that killed 50,000-100,000 people. President Emomali Rahmon has ruled since 1994. The country shares a 1,400-km border with Afghanistan, creating security concerns.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Economy

Aluminum (from the Talco smelter, one of the world's largest), cotton, gold, and remittances are the economic pillars. Russia and China are the dominant trade partners. The Rogun Dam, under construction on the Vakhsh River, will be the world's tallest dam at 335 meters when completed โ€” it's a national obsession. Agriculture employs about 60% of the population, mostly cotton. The somoni has been relatively stable but the economy is extremely vulnerable to Russian economic conditions.

๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know?

Tajikistan's Ismoil Somoni Peak (7,495 meters) is the highest point in the former Soviet Union. The Pamir region is sometimes called the "Roof of the World" โ€” communities live at altitudes above 4,000 meters. Tajikistan has the youngest population in Central Asia, with a median age of about 22.

๐Ÿ“ Outlook

Tajikistan's remittance dependency on Russia is a critical vulnerability โ€” any Russian economic downturn hits Tajik families directly. The Rogun Dam could provide energy security and export revenue, but the project has been decades in the making.
