Thailand is Southeast Asia's second-largest economy — 72 million people with a $500 billion GDP. The country is the world's largest rice exporter, the largest natural rubber producer, and a major automotive manufacturing hub (the "Detroit of Asia" — producing about 1.9 million vehicles annually). Bangkok is one of the world's most visited cities, drawing over 22 million international tourists annually. Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never colonized by a European power. The monarchy is deeply revered and protected by strict lèse-majesté laws. The country has experienced 13 successful military coups since 1932 — more than any other country.

Automotive, electronics, agriculture (rice, rubber, cassava, sugar), and tourism are the main sectors. China, the US, and Japan are the top trade partners. Tourism contributes about 12% of GDP directly. Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor is attracting investment in EV manufacturing — the country aims to become a regional EV hub. GDP growth has been modest at 2-3%, below the pre-2014 trend. Household debt is high at about 90% of GDP. The baht has been volatile.

Thailand's full ceremonial name for Bangkok is 168 characters long — it's the longest place name in the world. The country has the world's largest gold Buddha statue (5.5 tonnes) at Wat Traimit in Bangkok — it was hidden under plaster for 200 years to protect it from invaders. Thai massage was inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2019. Thailand is the world's largest orchid exporter.

Thailand's EV manufacturing pivot could revitalize the automotive sector, but political instability and an aging population are structural headwinds. The tourism machine is reliable but the economy needs higher-value industries to break out of the middle-income trap.
