Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of 106,000 people spread across 169 islands (36 inhabited) with a GDP of about $500 million. It's the only remaining monarchy in the Pacific and was never formally colonized — Tonga is proud of this distinction. The country was devastated by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption in January 2022, one of the most powerful eruptions in recorded history — it sent a shockwave around the world and triggered tsunamis across the Pacific. Tonga's rugby culture is legendary — the country produces more professional rugby players per capita than anywhere on earth.

Remittances (about 40% of GDP — one of the highest ratios in the world), agriculture (squash, vanilla, root crops), fishing, and tourism are the economic pillars. New Zealand and Australia are the main trade partners and aid donors. The volcanic eruption caused damage estimated at 18% of GDP. The country uses the pa'anga, pegged to a basket of currencies. Tonga has been exploring deep-sea mining in its exclusive economic zone, which could provide future revenue.

The 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption was the largest atmospheric explosion since Krakatoa in 1883 — it was heard 10,000 km away in Alaska and injected enough water vapor into the stratosphere to temporarily affect global temperatures. Tonga's humpback whale watching season (July-October) is one of the best in the world — you can swim with the whales. The country's traditional kava ceremony is central to social and political life.

Tonga's recovery from the 2022 eruption has been impressive, but the country remains extremely vulnerable to natural disasters and climate change. The remittance lifeline is reliable but not a development strategy.
