The UAE is a federation of seven emirates — Abu Dhabi and Dubai being the dominant two — with 10 million people (only 1.1 million are citizens) and a GDP of about $500 billion. Dubai has reinvented itself from a small trading port to a global hub for finance, tourism, logistics, and real estate. Abu Dhabi holds about 95% of the UAE's oil reserves (98 billion barrels). The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the world's tallest building at 828 meters. The UAE has become a major destination for Russian money and talent since 2022. The country's Emirates airline and Etihad Airways have made it a global aviation hub — Dubai International is the world's busiest airport for international passengers.

Oil and gas (primarily Abu Dhabi) account for about 30% of GDP, down from 60% two decades ago — the diversification is real. Tourism, real estate, financial services, logistics, and trade drive Dubai's economy. The UAE is the Middle East's largest re-export hub. Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth funds (ADIA, Mubadala, ADQ) manage over $1.5 trillion combined. The country has attracted major tech companies and is investing heavily in AI — it launched its own AI university (MBZUAI). The dirham is pegged to the US dollar.

The UAE went from having no space program to sending a probe to Mars (the Hope mission) in less than a decade — it arrived in 2021, making the UAE the first Arab nation to reach Mars. Dubai's Palm Jumeirah is the world's largest artificial island. The UAE has the world's highest density of construction cranes — at any given time, about 15-25% of the world's cranes are in the UAE.

The UAE's diversification is the most successful in the Gulf — Dubai proves a post-oil economy is possible. The geopolitical positioning (neutral, business-friendly, open to everyone) is a deliberate strategy that's paying off. The question is whether the model scales as competition from Saudi Arabia intensifies.
