Aruba is a Caribbean island of 107,000 people and a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with a GDP of about $3.5 billion. The island sits just 29 km off the Venezuelan coast but couldn't be more different economically. Aruba has one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean and the highest tourism density — about 2 million visitors per year for an island of 180 square kilometers. Eagle Beach is consistently ranked among the world's best beaches. The island is outside the hurricane belt, giving it a major advantage over other Caribbean destinations. Aruba's motto is "One Happy Island," and the tourism machine is remarkably efficient.

Tourism accounts for about 80% of GDP — one of the highest tourism dependencies in the world. The US provides about 70% of visitors. The island has a small oil refinery (recently restarted after closure) and an aloe vera industry. The Aruban florin is pegged to the US dollar. The cost of living is high, and nearly everything is imported. Aruba has invested in renewable energy, aiming for 100% renewable electricity — it already has significant wind and solar capacity.

Aruba's Natural Bridge, once the island's top attraction, collapsed in 2005 — a smaller "baby bridge" nearby has taken its place. The island has the highest concentration of aloe vera per square kilometer in the world. Aruba's Arikok National Park covers about 20% of the island and contains ancient Arawak cave paintings. The island has four official languages: Dutch, Papiamento, English, and Spanish.

Aruba's tourism model is well-oiled and the hurricane-free location is a genuine competitive advantage. But 80% tourism dependency is extreme — any disruption (pandemic, recession, airline route changes) hits hard. Diversification is talked about but hard to achieve on a tiny island.
