The United States is the world's largest economy ($27 trillion GDP), the dominant military power (spending more on defense than the next 10 countries combined), and the center of global technology, finance, and culture. The country of 335 million people produces about 25% of global GDP with about 4% of the world's population. The US is the world's largest oil producer (about 13 million barrels per day), the largest natural gas producer, and the largest agricultural exporter. Silicon Valley companies — Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, Nvidia — have a combined market cap exceeding the GDP of every country except China. The US dollar is the world's reserve currency, used in about 60% of global foreign exchange reserves and 88% of international trade transactions. The country's cultural exports — Hollywood, music, social media, fast food — are ubiquitous globally.

Technology, financial services, healthcare, energy, and advanced manufacturing are the pillars. The US has the world's deepest capital markets — the NYSE and NASDAQ combined market cap exceeds $50 trillion. The country runs a persistent trade deficit (about $800 billion annually) but attracts massive capital inflows. The Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions move global markets. GDP growth has been surprisingly strong at 2-3% despite high interest rates. The national debt exceeds $34 trillion (about 120% of GDP), and the fiscal trajectory is a growing concern. Income inequality is the highest of any developed country — the top 1% own about 30% of all wealth. The US spends about 17% of GDP on healthcare, far more than any other country, with worse outcomes than many peers.

The US interstate highway system, built starting in the 1950s, is the largest public works project in history — 77,000 km of roads. The country has about 330 million civilian-owned firearms — roughly one per person, more than any other country. The US has won more Nobel Prizes than any other country (over 400) and more Olympic medals (over 2,600). GPS, the internet, and the smartphone were all developed with US government funding.

The US remains the indispensable economy — its tech dominance, energy independence, and capital markets are unmatched. The risks are internal: political polarization, fiscal sustainability, and inequality. No country has replaced the US at the top, and none is close to doing so, but the domestic challenges are real and growing.
