Peru is a South American country of 34 million with a $240 billion GDP and extraordinary geographic diversity β Pacific coast desert, Andean highlands above 4,000 meters, and Amazon rainforest. The country is the world's second-largest copper producer, second-largest silver producer, and sixth-largest gold producer. Machu Picchu is one of the most visited archaeological sites on earth, drawing about 1.5 million visitors annually. Lima has become South America's culinary capital β it has more top-50 restaurants than any other city in the Americas. Peru's economy was Latin America's best performer for much of the 2000s-2010s, but political instability (six presidents in five years) has taken a toll.
Mining (copper, gold, silver, zinc) accounts for about 60% of exports. China is the largest trade partner, buying most of Peru's copper. Agriculture has diversified impressively β Peru is now the world's largest exporter of blueberries, avocados, and asparagus. Fishing (anchovies for fishmeal) is significant. GDP growth has slowed to 2-3% amid political chaos. The sol has been relatively stable. Informal employment accounts for about 70% of the workforce.

The Nazca Lines β massive geoglyphs in the desert visible only from the air β remain one of archaeology's greatest mysteries. Peru's Amazon region contains the boiling river of Shanay-Timpishka, where water temperatures reach 86Β°C β it was only scientifically documented in 2011.
Peru's mineral wealth and agricultural innovation are impressive, but the political dysfunction is a serious drag. The country needs institutional stability to match its economic potential β six presidents in five years is not a governance model.
