Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves (303 billion barrels) yet has experienced one of the worst economic collapses in modern history outside of wartime. GDP crashed from about $480 billion in 2014 to roughly $100 billion by 2023 — a 75% contraction. The population of 28 million has seen about 7.7 million people flee the country since 2014, the largest displacement crisis in the Western Hemisphere. Hyperinflation peaked at an estimated 1,000,000% in 2018. The Maduro government has maintained power through authoritarian control despite economic devastation. Venezuela was once Latin America's wealthiest country — Caracas in the 1970s was a cosmopolitan capital that attracted immigrants from Europe.

Oil is virtually the only export, but production has collapsed from 3.3 million barrels per day in the late 1990s to about 800,000 — a result of underinvestment, mismanagement, corruption, and US sanctions. China and Russia are the main creditors and trade partners. The bolívar has been redenominated three times, lopping off 14 zeros total. Dollarization has spread informally — about 60% of transactions now use US dollars. The non-oil economy has been decimated, with manufacturing output falling by over 70%. Some sanctions relief has allowed modest recovery.

Venezuela's Angel Falls is the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall at 979 meters — it's so tall that water often evaporates before reaching the bottom. The country has won more Miss Universe and Miss World titles than any other nation — beauty pageants are a national obsession. Venezuela's Lake Maracaibo has the world's most frequent lightning — the "Catatumbo Lightning" produces about 1.2 million lightning strikes per year.

Venezuela is the world's most dramatic example of resource curse and institutional failure. The oil reserves guarantee eventual relevance, but recovery from this depth of collapse will take decades and requires political change that shows no sign of coming.
