Colombia has undergone one of the most dramatic transformations in Latin America — from a country synonymous with drug violence to a $340 billion economy attracting record foreign investment. The population of 52 million is South America's third-largest. Colombia is the world's third-largest coffee producer, the largest emerald producer (90% of the world's supply), and the second-most biodiverse country on earth after Brazil. Medellín went from the world's murder capital in the 1990s to winning "most innovative city" awards. The 2016 peace deal with FARC ended a 52-year civil war, though implementation remains incomplete.
Oil is the top export earner at about 30% of revenue, followed by coal, coffee, and cut flowers (Colombia supplies 70% of US flower imports). The US is the dominant trade partner. GDP growth has averaged 3-4%, and the country has attracted significant tech investment — Bogotá and Medellín have growing startup ecosystems. The informal economy employs about 60% of workers. Coca production remains a shadow economy worth billions, despite decades of eradication efforts.

Colombia's Caño Cristales river turns five colors (red, blue, green, yellow, black) between July and November due to aquatic plants — it's called the "River of Five Colors." The country has more bird species than any other (over 1,900) and more orchid species than anywhere on earth. Colombia's hippo population — descended from four animals Pablo Escobar imported — has grown to over 100, the largest invasive hippo population outside Africa.
Colombia's trajectory is genuinely positive — the peace dividend, tourism boom, and tech growth are real. But oil dependency, incomplete peace implementation, and coca economics remain unresolved challenges.
