Brazil is a continental power — 215 million people, a $2.1 trillion GDP (9th globally), and the world's fifth-largest country by area. It contains 60% of the Amazon rainforest, produces more coffee than the next four countries combined, and is the world's largest exporter of soybeans, beef, chicken, sugar, and orange juice. São Paulo's economy alone is larger than Argentina's. Brazil is the most ethnically mixed large country on earth, a product of indigenous, Portuguese, African, and immigrant populations blending over centuries. The country has the world's largest Japanese population outside Japan (1.5 million), the largest Italian diaspora population (30 million descendants), and the largest African-descended population outside Africa.
Agriculture and agribusiness account for about 25% of GDP and nearly 50% of exports. Brazil is also a major oil producer — the pre-salt deepwater fields have pushed production above 3 million barrels per day. China surpassed the US as Brazil's top trade partner in 2009 and now buys about 30% of exports. The economy has been a rollercoaster: deep recession in 2015-16, slow recovery, COVID crash, then a commodity-driven rebound. Interest rates have been among the highest in the world, with the Selic rate frequently above 10%. Income inequality remains extreme — the Gini coefficient is among the worst of any major economy.

Brazil's Itaipu Dam on the Paraguay border was the world's largest hydroelectric plant for decades and still generates about 10% of Brazil's electricity and 90% of Paraguay's. The country has won the FIFA World Cup five times — more than any other nation. Brazil's Atlantic Forest, even more endangered than the Amazon, has lost 88% of its original cover but contains 5% of all species on Earth.
Brazil has everything it needs to be a top-five economy — resources, demographics, agricultural dominance — but institutional dysfunction, inequality, and deforestation politics keep holding it back. The agribusiness machine will keep delivering, but the broader potential remains frustratingly untapped.
