Austria is an 8.9-million-person Alpine republic with a $515 billion GDP that consistently ranks among Europe's wealthiest per capita. Vienna has topped the Economist's "most livable city" rankings multiple times and was the center of a 600-year empire that shaped European history. The country is a manufacturing powerhouse — it exports more per capita than Germany. Tourism brings in about $25 billion annually, split between winter skiing and summer cultural tourism. Austria is officially neutral, having declared permanent neutrality in 1955, though that status has been debated since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Manufacturing, particularly machinery, vehicles, and metal products, drives exports worth over $200 billion annually. Germany is by far the largest trade partner, absorbing about 30% of exports. The services sector, especially tourism and banking, contributes roughly 70% of GDP. Austria's unemployment rate sits around 5%, low by European standards, and the country has a strong apprenticeship system modeled similarly to Germany's.

Austria has produced more Nobel laureates per capita than almost any country — 22 in total from a small population. The country also invented the snow globe, the sewing machine, and PEZ candy. Red Bull, the world's most valuable beverage brand outside of Coca-Cola, is an Austrian company headquartered in Salzburg.

Austria's economy is solid but tightly coupled to Germany's — when German industry sneezes, Austria catches a cold. The green energy transition and its role as a neutral diplomatic hub give it outsized relevance.
