Ukraine is a European country of about 37 million (pre-war 44 million) with a GDP that's been devastated by Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Pre-war GDP was about $200 billion; it contracted by about 30% in 2022 before partially recovering. Ukraine is one of the world's most important agricultural producers — it was the world's fifth-largest wheat exporter and the largest sunflower oil exporter before the war disrupted Black Sea shipping. The country has significant industrial capacity (steel, machinery, aerospace) concentrated in the east, much of which is now in or near the conflict zone. Ukraine was granted EU candidate status in 2022 and has shown remarkable resilience — Kyiv's tech sector continued operating even under missile attacks.

Agriculture (grain, sunflower oil, corn), metals, IT services, and mining are the main sectors. The EU has become the dominant trade partner as Black Sea routes were disrupted. International financial support has been massive — over $100 billion in military and economic aid from Western allies. The hryvnia has been devalued but stabilized with central bank intervention. Reconstruction costs are estimated at $500+ billion. Ukraine's IT sector (about 300,000 developers) has been remarkably resilient, continuing to serve global clients throughout the war.

Ukraine's Chernobyl exclusion zone, site of the 1986 nuclear disaster, has become an accidental wildlife sanctuary — wolves, bears, and wild horses thrive in the absence of humans. The country has the deepest metro station in the world — Arsenalna in Kyiv at 105.5 meters underground. Ukraine's agricultural output is so significant that the war's disruption of grain exports triggered food price spikes across Africa and the Middle East.

Ukraine's future depends entirely on the war's outcome. The resilience and Western integration trajectory are remarkable, but the human and economic costs are staggering. Post-war reconstruction could be the largest rebuilding effort since the Marshall Plan.
