Germany is Europe's largest economy ($4.4 trillion GDP) and the world's third-largest exporter, with 84 million people. The country's Mittelstand — a network of 3.5 million small and medium-sized enterprises, many family-owned for generations — is the backbone of its manufacturing prowess. Germany produces more cars than any other European country, and its automotive sector (Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche) employs about 800,000 people directly. The country took in over 1 million refugees in 2015, the largest intake in European history. Germany's energy policy has been in turmoil — it shut down its last nuclear plants in 2023 while scrambling to replace Russian gas, which once supplied 55% of its needs. Berlin is Europe's startup capital by funding volume.

Automotive, machinery, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals dominate exports worth about $1.7 trillion annually. The US, China, France, and the Netherlands are the top trade partners. Germany has been in a mild recession or near-zero growth since 2023, raising questions about its industrial model — high energy costs, Chinese competition in EVs, and an aging workforce are structural challenges. The country runs a budget surplus obsession (the "debt brake" constitutional rule) that critics say underinvests in infrastructure and defense. Unemployment is low at about 5.5%, but the labor market is tightening as baby boomers retire.

Germany has over 1,500 breweries producing about 5,000 different beers, governed by the Reinheitsgebot (beer purity law) dating to 1516. The country's Autobahn still has sections with no speed limit — about 70% of the network. Germany pays more for electricity than almost any other developed country, roughly three times the US average, largely due to renewable energy surcharges and the gas crisis.

Germany's industrial model is under more pressure than at any point since reunification. The EV transition, energy costs, and Chinese competition are existential challenges for the Mittelstand. But counting out German engineering and adaptability has always been a losing bet.
