The United Kingdom is a $3.3 trillion GDP economy of 67 million people — the world's sixth-largest economy and a permanent member of the UN Security Council. London is one of only two "Alpha++" global cities (alongside New York), and the City of London is the world's largest international financial center. The UK left the EU in 2020 (Brexit), and the economic impact is still being debated — most economists estimate a 2-4% GDP hit over the long term. The country punches above its weight culturally: the English language, the BBC, Premier League football, British universities (four of the world's top 10), and the creative industries give it global influence disproportionate to its size. The NHS, founded in 1948, is the world's largest single-payer healthcare system.

Financial services (about 8% of GDP), professional services, pharmaceuticals (AstraZeneca, GSK), aerospace (Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems), and creative industries are the main sectors. The US, EU (collectively), and China are the top trade partners. The pound has weakened post-Brexit, and the economy has grown at just 1-2% — the slowest in the G7 alongside Germany. London's property market is one of the most expensive in the world. The UK has significant North Sea oil and gas production, though it's declining. The country is a leader in offshore wind energy, with the world's largest offshore wind farms.

The UK has invaded or had military presence in 171 of the world's 193 UN member states at some point in history. The country's pub culture is so embedded that there are about 47,000 pubs — though about 400 close every year. The British Museum has about 8 million objects, making it one of the largest collections in the world — many acquired during the colonial era and subject to repatriation demands. The UK's creative industries generate about £116 billion annually — more than automotive, aerospace, and oil combined.

The UK is still finding its post-Brexit identity. The financial services sector and universities remain world-class, but the growth challenge is real. The country has the talent and institutions to thrive, but needs a clearer economic strategy than it's had since 2016.
