Italy is the eurozone's third-largest economy ($2.2 trillion GDP) and the world's eighth-largest, with 59 million people. The country has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other nation (59) and is the world's largest wine producer, second-largest olive oil producer, and home to the global luxury fashion industry (Gucci, Prada, Armani, Versace). Italy's economic geography is split: the industrial north (Milan, Turin, Bologna) is as productive as Germany, while the south (Mezzogiorno) has unemployment rates above 15% and GDP per capita half the north's. The country has had over 70 governments since World War II. Italy's public debt is about 140% of GDP, the second-highest in the eurozone after Greece.

Manufacturing (machinery, automotive — Ferrari, Lamborghini, Fiat — fashion, food processing) drives exports worth about $650 billion annually. Germany, France, and the US are the top trade partners. Italy's small and medium enterprises, particularly in the "industrial districts" of Emilia-Romagna and Veneto, are globally competitive in niche manufacturing. Tourism generates about $55 billion annually. The economy has been stagnant for two decades — GDP per capita is roughly the same as in 2000. The banking sector has been cleaned up after years of bad loans, but growth remains elusive.

Italy has a "ghost town" problem — about 6,000 abandoned villages, many of which are being sold for €1 to attract new residents. The country's food industry is protected by over 300 PDO/PGI designations — more than any other country. Vatican City, an independent country within Rome, is the world's smallest state. Italy's San Marino, also within its borders, claims to be the world's oldest republic (founded 301 AD).

Italy's manufacturing excellence and cultural assets are unmatched, but two decades of stagnation and demographic decline (one of the lowest birth rates in the world) are existential challenges. The north-south divide shows no sign of closing.
