Spain is the eurozone's fourth-largest economy ($1.6 trillion GDP) with 48 million people, and it's been one of Europe's strongest post-pandemic performers. The country is the world's second-most visited (after France) with over 85 million international tourists annually โ tourism contributes about 12% of GDP. Spain is the world's largest olive oil producer (about 50% of global output), the third-largest wine producer, and Europe's largest producer of fruits and vegetables. The country has invested heavily in renewable energy and high-speed rail โ its AVE network is the longest in Europe. Spain's regional diversity is extraordinary: Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia, and Andalusia have distinct languages, cultures, and identities.
Tourism, automotive (Spain is Europe's second-largest car producer), agriculture, and renewable energy are the main sectors. France, Germany, Italy, and Portugal are the top trade partners. Spain's economy has been growing at 2-3%, outperforming Germany and France. Unemployment has fallen from a crisis peak of 27% to about 11%, but youth unemployment remains above 25%. Public debt is about 110% of GDP. The country has attracted significant investment in green hydrogen and solar energy โ it has the highest solar irradiance in Europe.

Spain's La Tomatina festival in Buรฑol involves 20,000 people throwing 150,000 tomatoes at each other โ it's the world's largest food fight. The country has the second-highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world (50). Spain's siesta culture is fading โ only about 18% of Spaniards actually take a daily nap, despite the stereotype. The country has more bars per capita than any other EU country.
Spain's economic recovery has been genuinely impressive, and the renewable energy position is a strategic asset. The structural unemployment problem and regional tensions (Catalonia) remain challenges, but the trajectory is positive.
